A second man has been charged with murder after a young dad was fatally shot in front of his family during a suspected home invasion gone wrong.

Zachery "Zac" Davies-Scott, 25, was killed after several people forced their way into a property at Heddon Greta, east of Cessnock in the NSW Hunter region, on December 27.

Paramedics tried to save Mr Davies-Scott but he died at the scene.

His pregnant partner witnessed the deadly attack.

A 52-year-old woman also sustained minor injuries attempting to fight off the attackers before the group fled in a white SUV.

Police set up a strike force to investigate the incident and on Thursday morning detectives arrested a 24-year-old man in Cessnock.

He was taken to Cessnock Police Station, where he was later charged with murder.

The man was refused bail to appear in Cessnock Local Court on Friday.

On Tuesday, detectives arrested 25-year-old Talon Dean at Boomerang Beach, south of Forster on the NSW mid-north coast.

He was later charged with Mr Davies-Scott's murder and appeared in Taree Local Court, where he did not apply for bail.
