Slippery slope - police checking chains, booze at snow

Snow-trippers have been warned to plan ahead, pack wheel chains and party responsibly this snow season.

Victoria Police turned back about 5700 vehicles last winter for failing to pack appropriate snow chains, which provide traction on icy or snow-covered roads.

Failing to pack chains can result in a $370 fine, and not fitting chains when directed could leave your wallet almost $1000 lighter.

Victoria Police Eastern Region Superintendent Shane Cashman said driving on icy roads without chains was a recipe for disaster.

“We have seen far too much trauma on Victorian roads this year and we implore anyone driving to the snow this season to be well prepared, drive cautiously, and take care of themselves, their family and their mates," Supt Cashman said in a statement.

Local police will maintain a constant presence at the major resorts this season, patrolling and spot-checking licensed venues and responsible service of alcohol.

"Those heading to the snow can also expect to see a heavy police presence on the mountains themselves, with local officers based at Mt Buller, Mt Hotham, and Falls Creek every day," Supt Cashman said.

Victoria's snow season officially opens on June 10.
