A man has been airlifted to hospital after being attacked by a shark while snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef.

A rescue helicopter was deployed after the man was bitten off Lady Elliot Island near the central Queensland coast on Thursday morning.

It is believed the man in his 50s was snorkelling in a shallow reef at the time of the attack.

He was treated for a deep laceration to an arm and superficial wounds to his abdomen and flown to Bundaberg hospital in a stable condition.
