A man accused of murdering his mother and dumping her body in the boot of a car has been formally refused bail during his first court appearance.

Jeramie James Massie, 39, was arrested at a unit on Park Street in the NSW beachside town of Evans Head on Friday.

Emergency services were called to the home following a concern for welfare report at about 8.10am.

A 60-year-old woman's body was discovered in the boot of a car parked in the street outside.

Massie was arrested at the scene.

He has been charged with domestic violence-related murder, as well as improperly interfere with corpse or human remains.

Massie was formally refused bail in the Lismore Local Court on Saturday and will reappear on April 24.
