Australia's world-title hope Ethan Ewing will have to wait at least one more day for his cut-throat elimination-round heat at Jeffreys Bay in South Africa after the World Surf League (WSL) called a lay day.

Inconsistent, small surf and onshore winds on Saturday left officials monitoring a new swell before they make another call on resuming the Corona Open on Sunday morning.

Beaten in the opening round, No.3-ranked Ewing next takes on South African wild card Adin Masencamp as the Australian attempts to keep his J-Bay defence alive and boost his world-title quest.

Connor O'Leary, Callum Robson, Jack Robinson, Ryan Callinan and Liam O'Brien will be the other Aussies in elimination-round action when competition resumes, with No.8-ranked Robinson pitted against surfing legend Kelly Slater.

The women's event has yet to begin, with Australian stars Tyler Wright, Stephanie Gilmore and Molly Picklum drawn in separate first-round heats.

World No.2 Wright reached the final at J-Bay last year, downing Gilmore in the last four before she fell to Brazilian Tatiana Weston-Webb in the Corona Open title showdown.

Reigning world champion Gilmore is looking for a big result to try to break into the top five, who will compete in the WSL Finals, where she will hope to add a ninth title.

She currently sits sixth in the standings while young gun Picklum is ranked fourth.
