Key Sydney defender Tom McCartin will make his long-awaited AFL return following a battle with concussion issues.

McCartin will be selected for the Swans' clash with Richmond at the MCG on Thursday night.

The 23-year-old sustained a head knock in the Swans' round-four defeat to Port Adelaide, the same game his brother Paddy also suffered a concussion.

McCartin returned in round seven, but his comeback lasted only two games after experiencing headaches and concussion symptoms.

He has been eased back into action through the VFL in recent weeks, but will be ready to tackle the Tigers after taking part in the Swans' captain's run on Wednesday.

"It's great to have Tom back," Swans co-captain Callum Mills said at the MCG.

"He has been really important to us for the last couple of years and for him to get back on track through the reserves and now back in the seniors is awesome.

"He's been really diligent with what he needed to do to get back from the concussion stuff.

"He's been a super professional and hasn't put a foot wrong."
