The AFL world will have the chance to farewell all-time great Lance Franklin as he closes the chapter on his 19-year playing career.

In his first public appearance since announcing an immediate retirement, Franklin will complete a half-time lap of honour at the SCG on Sunday during Sydney's clash against Melbourne.

The Sydney and Hawthorn legend was conspicuously absent from his own retirement media conference in July.

"To acknowledge one of the all-time greats is important," Swans coach John Longmire said.

"It's terrific to be able to farewell the big fella. I'm sure the crowd will get a lot out of it.

"He'll get a lot out of it and hopefully his family does."

Considered the greatest forward of his generation, Franklin is a four-time Coleman medallist, an eight-time All Australian and a 13-time leading goalkicker for his two clubs.

He began his professional footballing journey in 2005 with Hawthorn, before stunning the sport with a surprise move to Sydney in 2013.

The 36-year-old is the fourth-highest goalkicker in VFL/AFL history, having kicked 1066 goals in his career.

With 354 games to his name, he is also the fourth Indigenous player to reach the 350 VFL/AFL games milestone.

Sydney will also pay tribute to ruckman Tom Hickey and defender Paddy McCartin.

McCartin retired earlier last week due to ongoing concussion problems while Hickey will hang up his boots at the end of the Swans' season.

"It doesn't feel like it's done. Hopefully, we've still got five weeks left," Hickey said.

"When we hit our last game, whether it's holding up a premiership cup or in tears 'cause we've lost, it'll hit me pretty hard then.

"But right now, I've said what I needed to say and it's over and now we can just get back to playing footy.

"I've got none left. I've got nothing to be holding in the tank, and I'll be fighting as hard as I can.

"And you know, there's no bigger task than Max Gawn and the SCG."

Sydney will battle it out against Melbourne to grab a home final.

They are seventh and must finish fifth or sixth to host an elimination final.
