Sweden are confident of shaking off their record of near-misses at major tournaments when the European heavyweights kick off their Women's World Cup title tilt against South Africa.

The world No.3 won silver behind Canada at the Tokyo Olympics and bronze in Rio, while they were third at the 2019 World Cup and Euros semi-finalists last year.

"History is history and future is futures. You can only live in nowadays," coach Peter Gerhardsson told reporters on Saturday, stressing all the focus was on Sunday's Group G opener in Wellington.

Kosovare Asllani will captain the Swedes in the opening game and insists they are ready to handle the heat.

"Sweden is always a contender, I would say," Asllani said, via a FIFA translator.

"It's not only because we are very highly ranked in world rankings because at the end of the day that doesn't matter at all.

"But it's the way that we approach matches and tournaments, more and more players that got experience from tournaments and were more comfortable (with) being a favourite in a sense like we've been before as well.

"Primarily the way in which we approach this as a team, we have plenty of players with excellent qualities.

"Right now I'm just dying to get out there and show people what we've been practising in the past couple of weeks."

Both Asllani and experienced defender Magdalena Eriksson said Sweden would have to ensure they handle Wellington's windy conditions.

Later on Sunday, 2019 finalists the Netherlands kick off their campaign against Portugal.

The Netherlands have dealt with an interrupted preparation, including being incensed by the presence of a cricket pitch in the middle of their Tauranga Bay Oval training ground.

"We want to play a good first match against Portugal here, we want to have a top preparation, a top tournament and we also consider ourselves a top team. This does not fit. This fits with amateurism of the highest order."

The world No.9 will look to keep pace with Group E leaders the United States, who beat Vietnam 3-0 on Saturday.

World No.5 France will face Jamaica in their opening Group F match in Sydney.

Les Bleues lost to the Matildas 1-0 in their warm-up but will go in as heavy favourites against the Reggae Girlz, who had lamented subpar support from their federation in the tournament lead-up.

France will also need to find a way to curtail Manchester City striker Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw, one of the most dangerous players in the tournament.
