A teenager has been arrested after a police ute was stolen in an incident that prompted a pursuit in the NSW Riverina area.

Officers allege a 17-year-old boy was seen driving a NSW Police caged truck in Coolac about 9.10am on Saturday.

Police chased the stolen vehicle through a number of rural and main roads surrounding Gundagai before it stopped in a park and the youth was arrested about 10.55am.

A roadside breath test on the boy returned a positive result, police said, and a second reading at Wagga Wagga Police Station was 0.09.

The boy was charged with nine offences including stealing a motor vehicle, driving dangerously, driving middle range PCA - first offence, using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention and being a learner not accompanied by a driver.

Officers said a Highway Patrol sedan and two Riverina police vehicles were damaged when the stolen ute rammed them.

The teenager was refused bail to appear in a children's court on Sunday.
