Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke will play four concerts in Australia as part of his first-ever solo tour.

"I will be alone on stage trying a new kind of solo show thing playing versions of songs from my recent and not so recent past," the musician announced on social media on Monday.

The tour will start in New Zealand in October, followed by two concerts in November at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne, then two more at the Sydney Opera House forecourt.

It will be followed by a performance in Singapore and a string of dates in Japan.

Thom Yorke last played in Australia with Radiohead in 2012.

The "Everything" tour will showcase a back catalogue stretching over decades, featuring Radiohead tracks, his most recent work with The Smile, and various solo and soundtrack numbers.

“This is historic. I’m ecstatic to announce the long-awaited Opera House debut of one of the greatest musicians of our time," Sydney Opera House contemporary music chief Ben Marshall said.

The announcement follows two new recordings from Yorke released in quick succession, with The Smile's Wall of Eyes released in January and Yorke's soundtrack for the film Confidenza in April.

Tickets to the Australian concerts will go on sale to the general public on Wednesday.
