Police are investigating a major data breach that exposed 9000 sensitive court files.
NSW Police's cybercrime squad was alerted on Tuesday to the breach of the state's Online Registry Website, which provides access to civil and criminal court cases.
Apprehended violence orders and affidavits were among the files that were downloaded, police said.
Detectives were working with the Department of Communities and Justice to contain and investigate the extent of the breach.
NSW Attorney-General Michael Daley said the department and police were taking the incident seriously and were working to ensure the integrity of the system following the "significant" leak.
"They are also working to urgently identify and contact affected users and the public will be kept updated as more information becomes available,” he said in a statement.
