Climate action and economic development will be on the agenda as Treasurer Jim Chalmers visits New Zealand.

Dr Chalmers heads to Wellington on Wednesday as the two countries mark 40 years of the Australia-New Zealand Closer Economic Relations Trade Agreement, known as the CER.

The treasurer will meet with NZ Finance Minister Grant Robertson.

"There will be a focus on climate, there will be a meeting with the New Zealand Reserve Bank and with investors and the chamber of commerce as well as others," Dr Chalmers said.

The CER is considered one of the world's most comprehensive and effective free-trade agreements, covering substantially all trans-Tasman trade in goods, including agricultural products and services.
