Unexpected rain band to hit northern Western Australia

WA's Kimberley region - hit by devastating floods in January - is bracing for heavy rain once more. (PR HANDOUT IMAGE PHOTO)

An unseasonable rain band is set to hit northern Western Australia leading to potential flooding and cold conditions.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the rain band would hit on Monday and will bring cold temperatures with it - as much as 10 degrees below the usual average.

And while there is uncertainty about where the heaviest rainfall will be, heavy rain is expected throughout the eastern Pilbara, Kimberley and northern Interior.

"For the eastern Pilbara and south-west Kimberley, the heaviest rainfall will be on Monday, with the focus of the system then shifting to much of the central Kimberley from Tuesday," the Bureau said in a statement on Sunday.

"This rain band is expected to weaken across the central and eastern Kimberley on Wednesday, however further rainfall may redevelop later in the week."

Heavy rainfall may cause localised flooding, impact roads and travellers in the area and some communities may become isolated.

A Flood Watch has been issued for Desert and Kimberley catchments.
