A van driver has been killed in a collision with a bus carrying schoolchildren in Melbourne's east.

The vehicles crashed on Warburton Highway at Woori Yallock near Yarra Junction at 3.35pm on Thursday.

The van driver is yet to be identified and no one else was in the vehicle at the time.

A small number of students from Upper Yarra Secondary College on the public transport bus were not hurt, Victoria's education department said.

The bus driver aged in his 60s was injured and taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.

“We will work with the school over the coming days to ensure students, families and staff get any support they need," a department spokesman said.

The crash is under investigation and witnesses are urged to contact police.
