A West Australian man has pleaded guilty to the murder of a Geelong woman three decades ago.

Darren John Chalmers, 56, on Friday admitted the murder of 29-year-old Annette Steward on March 16, 1992.

Chalmers was charged earlier this year and extradited to Victoria to face the charge.

He admitted guilt during a preliminary hearing in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday.

Ms Steward, a mother-of-two who worked at a Point Henry factory, was found strangled in her Geelong West home on March 18, 1992.

A friend noticed her car was in the driveway and let himself into the house, where he found her body.

In 2015, Victoria Police offered a $1 million reward for information relating to her suspicious death.

Chalmers' case will now go to the Victorian Supreme Court.
