Wallaroos look to build some buzz ahead of World Cup

The Wallaroos are intent on laying a platform to upstage England when they host the next Women's Rugby World Cup, and captain Siokapesi Palu Sekona believes the groundwork is set to begin.

Australia's women's rugby team kick off a bumper quadruple header when they play Scotland at Accor Stadium on Saturday.

But Palu Sekona refuses to see the Wallaroos' participation in the rugby union extravaganza as an opening act to the men's Bledisloe Cup Test, insisting that they also want to put on a show.

It comes ahead of their home World Cup in 2029, where the Australians are aiming to host an even bigger competition than last year's edition in England.

The tournament sold over 440,000 tickets, more than triple the 2021 version in New Zealand, while the final at Twickenham drew a record crowd of 81,885.

Palu Sekona says Saturday's occasion in front of a big crowd gives the Australians a huge opportunity to create some buzz.

"We've seen what the British and Lions Tour has done here for Australia in the last 24 months. We've seen what a home World Cup can do with England and the spectacle that we're able to experience. We want to be able to bring that home," the captain said on Friday.

"We want to change the view that Australia has on rugby, and we know that the men's Rugby World Cup will set the platform next year, and we're just going to hope to build off that.

"We know that the men get a lot of traction and can get people around their game, but I think we're just as exciting, if not better."

Beyond the World Cup preparations, the Wallaroos captain is looking to help continue her team's winning momentum after they knocked off Scotland 30-10 last month.

They'll welcome back try-scoring sensation Maya Stewart (Achilles) onto the wing while experienced duo Eva Karpani and Cecilia Smith join Allana Sikimeti and Piper Simons as the new faces on the bench.

"When you've (taken on) a side you've defeated, you're not going to expect the same team," Palu Sekona said.

"Travelling here, they'll want to make a statement, and they've got a point to prove.

"It was a tough win to get in that second half. So we've just got to make sure we start well, and we just keep building from that."
