A woman has been charged after a man was allegedly randomly stabbed outside a cinema in a busy inner-city suburb.

Emergency services were called to the Dendy Newtown cinema on King St in Sydney's inner-west about 11.40am on Monday following reports of an assault.

Police said a 48-year-old man had allegedly been stabbed in the hand by an unknown woman.

Officers later found a 26-year-old woman allegedly armed with a knife.

They demanded she drop the knife but when she failed to heed their calls, she was tasered and arrested, NSW Police said.
