A man charged with attempted murder had been arrested three times but was out on bail when he allegedly threatened a woman and three children with a machete during a home invasion.

Fraser Alexander Thomson, 41, is accused of breaking into a house at Kellyville, in northwest Sydney, about 2.30am on Tuesday in a domestic violence-related incident.

Police allege he threatened the occupants, including the woman and children, before being restrained by a 39-year-old man who was also in the house.

Multiple media outlets reported that the younger man was the former husband of the 35-year-old woman, while Thomson was her ex-boyfriend.

The 39-year-old man was left with cuts to his hands, while Thomson received lacerations on his arms.

Both men were taken to hospital for treatment.

The woman and three children were described by police as shaken but unharmed.

Thomson did not turn up in person and refused to appear by audio-visual link when his case was called at Parramatta Local Court on Wednesday.

He also would not speak to barrister Kirk Dailly, who appeared for Thomson's solicitor Richard McDonald.

The 41-year-old breached an apprehended domestic violence order by attending the Kellyville home, police prosecutors told the court.

Thomson was charged with a slew of offences after his discharge from hospital, including assault with intent to murder the 39-year-old man.

According to court documents, Thomson had been arrested three times in August but remained out on bail.

He is alleged to have stalked or intimidated the woman on five separate occasions between October 2021 and this month.

Police have also brought charges of two further domestic violence order breaches that allegedly occurred before the latest contravention.

On Wednesday, Thomson did not apply for bail and remains behind bars.

Detective Superintendent Darrin Batchelor previously said some items Thomson brought with him suggested he intended to cause harm to those inside the house.

"There were a number of young children inside the premises, so you can understand how traumatic and frightening this was for everyone involved," he said.

Thomson will next appear before the courts on October 19 to give time for the Director of Public Prosecutions to take over the case.
