Requiring season-ending knee surgery, Australian young gun Alex Toohey has been cut by Golden State, who took him with their top 2025 NBA draft pick.
The 21-year-old forward, who played in the NBL with the Sydney Kings, has made way for the Warriors to sign former Oklahoma City Thunder tall Malevy Leons.
Starting 25 of 29 games, Toohey claimed the NBL Next Generation Award after a stellar 2024/25 season.
He averaged 10.6 points and 1.4 steals per game as the Kings bowed out in the play-in tournament with a loss to Adelaide.
The Canberra product was selected No.52 overall and was part of the massive seven-team trade that saw Kevin Durant go to the Houston Rockets last summer.
Lauded for his basketball IQ and passing game, two-metre tall Toohey never really got the chance to showcase his ability.
He missed all of pre-season with the left knee injury and suited up for only two games, averaging seven points and three rebounds for Golden State’s G League affiliate Santa Cruz Warriors.
Toohey was one of four Australians taken in the second round of this year’s draft, alongside Cleveland’s Tyrese Proctor, Minnesota’s Rocco Zikarsky and Chicago’s Lachlan Olbrich.
Signing Levy to a two-way contract, the Dutch forward has spent the past two seasons with Oklahoma City, primarily playing for the OKC Blue in the G League.
Leons also appeared in six games for the Thunder during their 2024-25 championship season.
