A young child has died in a house fire after a woman and two other children escaped the blaze.

Firefighters made the tragic discovery late on Saturday after they were called to a burning home in Woodstock, near Cowra, in rural NSW.

"Officers attached to Chifley Police District arrived to find the home well alight," a NSW police spokesman said.

"A woman and two children were able to escape the property, however, a four-year-old child remained unaccounted for."

Fire and Rescue NSW firefighters later found the child's body inside the home after extinguishing the blaze.

The woman was taken to Cowra Hospital in a stable condition, suffering smoke inhalation.

A crime scene has been established, and inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the fire are ongoing.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
