A man has died after being gunned down in a daylight attack in a suburban laneway.

Two men were involved in an altercation in a laneway at Wollert north of Melbourne just before 9am, Homicide Squad Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said.

Police believe a 21-year-old Wollert man was killed, while another man fled in an unknown car.

Crime scene images show a silver BMW sedan parked in front of a skip bin, its driver’s side window shattered and the door left open.

The man's body was found next to the car, with the laneway cordoned off by police.

Officers received reports of a burnt-out car on Amery Street in Reservoir about 13km away from the shooting, Det Insp Thomas said.

“We don’t know if that is linked to this particular incident this morning,” he said.

Detectives believe the shooting was a deliberate and targeted attack.
