Four-time Australian 100m champion Rohan Browning has announced his shock retirement, less than two months after the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The 28-year-old was part of Australia's triumphant 4 x 100m relay team there, and felt the gold medal victory signalled the ideal time to sign off with his best racing behind him.
"I really wanted to go out on a high note and after winning the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in the relay, it was only going to go downhill from there," said Browning, who retires as the fourth fastest Australian man in history.
"The athlete in me still thinks that I could get back, run personal bests and compete at the highest level, but no athlete is ever going to be truly satisfied.
"The thing that I’m actually proudest of is that I made every team from my debut in 2017 to my retirement in 2026."
Winning the Australian 100m title in 2019, 2021, 2023 and 2025, dual Olympian Browning hit the headlines in his first Games in Tokyo in 2021.
He won his heat of the men’s 100m in his still-standing personal best time of 10.01 seconds.
"That was a moment that changed my life," Browning said.
"It gave me a really healthy dose of self-belief because it had been a quiet period for Australian men’s sprinting.
"There weren’t many role models on the scene and I feel like I had to forge that path myself.”
While the coveted 10- second barrier proved elusive, he helped path the way for current Australian sprint king Lachlan Kennedy, who went under the mark in April this year.
Browning still managed to edge his rival at the 2025 national titles, clocking 10.01 seconds again.
"I feel like I’ve played my role within the event in Australia, and the sport has taught me to understand myself," Browning said.
"I've cherished every opportunity I’ve had to represent Australia and I’m looking forward to being able to enjoy athletics as a fan."
