Catholic first communion video falsely claimed to show Muslim child wedding

This video depicts a Catholic first communion, not a Muslim wedding. (AAP/Facebook)

What was claimed

Video shows an Islamic wedding between a child and a man.

Our verdict

False. The video shows a father and daughter at the girl’s first communion in Italy.

AAP FACTCHECK - A video does not show an Islamic wedding between an underage girl and an adult man, despite social media claims.

The video actually shows an Italian father and daughter during the young girl’s first communion, a traditional Catholic ceremony.

A New Zealand user has shared a Facebook post featuring the video of a man bending down on one knee to present a girl with a ring.

"This is a valid Islamic marriage," overlay text in the video reads, along with an emoji showing a white crescent moon and a star on a purple tile.

However, a reverse image search shows the event was not an Islamic wedding but a man giving a ring to his daughter on her first communion in Italy in 2023.

AAP FactCheck found videos of the same scene from a different angle on the Instagram account of the man in the video: Gino Coppola, with an Italian caption that translates as "I’ll forever be your knight I love you so much dad".

Meanwhile, a different video posted on Mr Coppola’s TikTok shows him standing beside his daughter with the caption “Communion of our little one!!!”

AAP FactCheck also contacted Mr Coppola via his Instagram account, and he confirmed the videos showed his daughter's first communion.

“Yes,” Mr Coppola said.

“It's a video of my daughter's first communion. It's now spread everywhere."
