A man on the run for two days after allegedly stabbing and assaulting detention centre contractors has been arrested and charged.

The 28-year-old was being driven from Villawood Detention Centre in Sydney's west to the airport when the driver and passenger were allegedly attacked about 3.40am on Thursday.

A 54-year-old man was allegedly stabbed in the neck and cheek, while a 36-year-old man was allegedly assaulted during the escape.

Both injured men, who were working as contractors at the facility, were treated at Westmead Hospital.

The Tongan national allegedly fled the scene, sparking a two-day police manhunt.

Police received reports on Friday night that the man had been spotted in Eschol Park, about 50km southwest of Sydney's CBD.

Officers arrested the man and a woman a short time later on Ballantrae Drive in St Andrews.

The 24-year-old woman has been charged with knowingly harbouring, maintaining or employing an escaped inmate. She was granted bail and is expected to appear at Campbelltown Local Court on Thursday.

The man has been charged with causing wounding/grievous bodily harm to a person with intent to murder and wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court on Saturday.
