AAP FACTCHECK - A widely shared image purporting to show the cover of The Economist magazine's The World Ahead 2027 edition is AI-generated.
The magazine has not yet published the 2027 edition of The World Ahead, an annual publication that provides predictions and analysis for the following year.
The fake cover is AI-generated and was created using OpenAI's image creation tools.
The image has spread across social media, with some users suggesting it's evidence of what is "going to happen" in 2027.
An August 31 Facebook post by a UK user suggests the image is evidence of a global conspiracy.
"The Year 2027 'Predicted' in 2026," the post reads.
"They have to tell you before they do it, that way the karmic debt is passed to you.
"Your silence is your compliance."
A Uruguay-based page has also included the image in an August 30 post that has received tens of thousands of views.
"What awaits us next year? Should we start stockpiling water and non-perishable food?" an English translation of the post reads.
The image itself is designed to look like the cover of The Economist and features a composite graphic with the word "2027" on a cake near the centre.
It includes the headline "The world in 2027", and a date range below the masthead suggests it's the publication's edition for the week of January 4 to January 10, 2027.
However, it's fake. The Economist typically publishes its World Ahead edition, which has been running for 40 years, in November each year.
At the time of writing, the 2027 edition has not yet been published.
A spokesperson for The Economist confirmed to AAP FactCheck that the cover is fake.
OpenAI's verification tool confirms the image includes a digital SynthID watermark, meaning it was generated using the tech company's AI.
The fake cover closely resembles the front of the magazine's 2026 edition of The World Ahead, published in November 2025, including the same composite theme and similar colours.
The fake 2027 version also contains similar imagery, including a cake, a container ship, a hand-cuffed fist, rockets, satellites, pills, robots and hypodermic needles.
