A police officer fired a shot after a man allegedly rammed an unmarked police car in Melbourne's east.

Police say a van rammed the vehicle at Dandenong North on June 16 but no one was injured.

The 40-year-old from South Australia has been charged with recklessly exposing a police officer to risk by driving, and conduct endangering serious injury.

The Professional Standards Command is now overseeing the incident as is standard procedure, according to a statement from Victoria Police.

The same man has also been charged with more than 200 other offences over the alleged theft of car parts worth an estimated $270,000.

He's accused of stealing more than 70 catalytic converters which are valuable due to the metal they are made from.

The man faced court on Wednesday and is due to appear again in September.
