Police are awaiting the results of an autopsy to reveal what killed a man whose body was found in the car park of a unit complex in a beachside Sydney suburb.

Emergency services were called to Ilikai Place in Dee Why, on the city's northern beaches, just after 7am on Monday following reports of the body being found.

Police found a 40-year-old man dead in the car park area of a low-rise apartment building in the quiet cul-de-sac.

A man is being questioned by officers, who are treating the death as suspicious.

An investigation is under way after a man's body was found in the car park of a Sydney unit complex.

Acting Superintendent Traci Watt on Monday afternoon said the man's cause of death was unclear.

"We will be waiting on the results of the autopsy to understand how this gentleman has died,” she told reporters.

A heavy police presence was visible at the site after the body was found and the area was cordoned off with tape.

Anyone with information about the death is being urged to contact investigators.
