Snow season ends early for half of Vic's alpine resorts

Half of Victoria's alpine resorts will close a month earlier than expected due to unseasonal conditions.

The lower-altitude Mt Baw Baw, Mt Stirling and Lake Mountain resorts will finish their snow seasons on Sunday rather than the end of September.

Lower than usual snowfall was making it unsafe to continue skiing, tobogganing and snow play activities, a Mt Baw Baw spokesperson said.

"The warmer nights have also impacted the snow production," the statement read.

A Lake Mountain spokesperson also cited the unseasonal conditions.

"The inclement weather conditions have impacted the snowfall as well as the capacity of snow that can be made and preserved, resulting in reduced snow depths," the statement read.

The resort, about 120km northeast of Melbourne, will now transition to its green season operations, with mountain bike tracks already being cleared.

But Victoria's higher altitude resorts - Mt Bulla, Falls Creek and Mt Hotham - will remain open for snow activities until the end of the official snow season.

Mt Bulla has reduced its number of snow lifts down to seven but there was still 58cm of snow for visitors to enjoy, a spokeswoman told AAP.

Falls Creek has also closed some of its snow lifts over the past couple of weeks, with 10 operating on Wednesday.
