Trio sentenced after man shot in 'showdown over girl'

It was compared to the plot of a great book, opera and even Greek mythology.

Two groups of young men met in a confrontation over a woman after a Snapchat invitation by Jalaallo Deen Sayed.

Sayed expected a fist fight in the March 2019 showdown in a Brisbane park, but someone produced a rifle and in the end, a man was shot.

More than four years later, three men charged over the incident appeared in Brisbane District Court on Tuesday.

"This was all over a woman, ultimately," Judge Michael Byrne said.

"She used to be associated with a man from one group and became associated with a man from another group.

"There have been many great books and operas written about that."

Defence barrister Angus Edwards replied: "She wasn't Helen of Troy but she almost caused as much trouble for these young men."

Sayed had invited the man who was "attracting the romantic attentions of this young lady" to a Kuraby park in Brisbane's south on Snapchat, the court heard.

As a result, the two groups met about 11pm but Sayed was not present.

Judge Byrne said Sayed was liable on the basis that he procured others to attend the park in his absence to engage in what he anticipated would only be a fist fight.

However, after insults were exchanged in the park, a man produced a rifle and shot someone in the other group.

Sayed, 22, pleaded guilty to affray and was sentenced to 100 hours of community service.

"As a young man you developed a hot head over something that really at the end of the day was not worth the effort you put into," Judge Byrne said.

"You led this group into public confrontation albeit that you did not expect there would be any weapons used and in that sense you were something of the driving force towards all of this."

His father Mirways Sayed, 48, pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to dangerous conduct with a weapon, receiving nine months in jail with immediate parole.

He was not present at the park but helped when the car carrying the weapon later broke down, court heard.

"It's at that stage you then became aware there had been a shooting," Judge Byrne said.

"You acted to assist by hiding members of the group both from reprisals and from police intervention.

"You have got yourself caught up no doubt out of mixed loyalty."

Palu Letoa, 24, pleaded guilty to dangerous conduct with a weapon.

He was present at the park but was not aware that the rifle had been brought to the confrontation until shortly before it was fired.

Judge Byrne said Letoa was liable because he did nothing to discourage the use of the weapon.

Letoa received a 12-month jail term with immediate parole.

A suspended sentence was also activated with immediate release.

"Public displays of violence are not going to be tolerated in this country," Judge Byrne said.
