Two men are dead after a light plane crashed into a paddock.

Emergency services were called to the crash scene in Scone, in NSW's Upper Hunter region, just before 2pm AEDT on Friday.

NSW Police said it was working to identify the men.

A crime scene was established at the site, near the Scone Aerodrome, and will be examined by specialist officers.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said it had been informed of the crash, but it did not investigate recreational aircraft accidents.

"The accident has been reported to us and we have confirmed it was a kit-built aircraft on the recreational register," a spokesperson said.

Recreational Aviation Australia has also been informed of the crash.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
