Murder charges have been laid against a woman after the stabbing death of another woman known to her in a Brisbane home.

Police responded to reports of a disturbance at an address on Oxford Street in Hamilton about 8.45am on Thursday.

The woman in her 40s was stabbed several times including in the chest and was taken to hospital but died of her injuries, police said.

A 55-year-old woman has been charged with murder and enter with intent.

Officers had attended the building previously for disturbances, police said.

"We've received some information in relation to previous instances of disturbances," Detective Inspector John Mison told reporters on Thursday.

"This was a few days out of Christmas, this is a very sad reminder of a tragic loss of life."

The woman is expected to face the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday.
