Air strikes in a town near the Yemeni capital Sanaa has killed 22 people and wounded 30 others, mostly women and children, a spokesman for the Houthi-run health ministry says.

Speaking to the Associated Press, Anees Alasbahi accused Saudi Arabia of carrying out the strikes in the village of al-Shariya.

The Houthi-run TV broadcaster al-Masirah reported 22 were killed after Saudi jets struck houses in the Bani Hushaysh district in Sanaa that are controlled by the militia.

Thirty others were injured in the reported bombardment, the broadcaster added, quoting a local hospital official.

Footage from al-Masirah of the aftermath of Saturday's strikes showed staff carrying limp bodies of young children out of ambulances bringing the casualties to a local hospital.

One little girl had horrific head injuries.

Other children lay on stretchers, bloodied and bandaged as staff tended to them.

Footage from the village showed the rubble of destroyed houses and dust filling the air as people hid in nearby agricultural fields.

The Houthi-controlled news agency Saba reported renewed Saudi strikes against houses and paramedics in the same area but did not give potential casualties.

There was no immediate comment from Saudi Arabia.

Market attack aftermath

The attacks came a day after Houthi officials said 30 people were killed in strikes on a market in southern Yemen.

The Iran-aligned Houthi rebels and Yemen's Saudi-backed military each blamed the other for that strike.

Saudi Arabia backs Yemen's internationally recognised government.

Yemeni government forces had repulsed a Houthi attack on the al-Aqroud front in the contested Taiz province in the country's southwest, pro-government media reported on Saturday.

The fighting, which lasted for hours, inflicted heavy losses on the Houthi rebels, added the reports.

There was no comment from the Houthis.

In recent months, the Houthi fighters have stepped up attacks on neighbouring Saudi Arabia, with airports and oil facilities among the main targets in the oil-wealthy kingdom.
