Aussies in world record romp over Wales

Australia's monster 124-6 win over Wales has broken the record for the biggest victory in women's rugby league history, sending the Jillaroos to the semi-finals in style.

Both Jess Sergis and Jaime Chapman, who scored a double-hat-trick at CommBank Stadium on Sunday, recorded more running metres than the entire Welsh side.

Winger Chapman's six-try haul equalled the record for most tries in a game for the Jillaroos, who will face Fiji in a semi-final next Sunday at Allianz Stadium.

Coach Jess Skinner was hugely proud of the polished performance from the Australian side.

"The girls played great," Skinner said.

"I thought that Wales came out firing to start with, and I know they're building as well, so the girls did really well today."

The one-sided result surpassed France's 116-0 win over Serbia in 2023 as the heaviest victory in the history of the international women's game.

Australian five-eighth Jesse Southwell was almost perfect on the kicking tee, slotting 20 conversions from 21 attempts.

Coupled with a try, the No.6's 44 individual points is a new Jillaroos record.

With Australia resting Jocelyn Kelleher for this final group game, it was Southwell's first time partnering Taryn Aiken in the halves.

With all three playmakers in fine form, Skinner now finds herself with a selection headache ahead of the semi-final.

"It's the first time she's (Southwell) played with Taryn as a half pairing, so really good to see those two working together and playing and executing a game plan," the coach said.

"We've got talent across the park in all positions, and we'll review this week and start looking at next week, probably as soon as we get home tonight.

"We're here to win a World Cup, and it takes 23 girls to win a World Cup, and we've got a great team culture where it doesn't matter what number you wear on your jersey, everyone has a role to play."

A clunky opening for the Aussies was put to bed when Olivia Kernick crossed for the first points of the afternoon before Chapman burned Wales on the outside for the next two tries - all three scored without Wales touching the ball.

The Welsh did not have another possession for the entire first half as Australia cruised to a 60-0 lead at the break.

Whilst suffering a historic defeat, the Welsh also put on the first points scored against the Jillaroos all tournament.

Wales got themselves on the board in the 59th minute when Tayla Preston grubbered through to Paige Travis for a much-celebrated try.

Sergis had four tries, while Keilee Joseph, Abbi Church and Tamika Upton crossed for doubles.

Kernick, Southwell, Kezie Apps, Sariah Paki, and Keeley Nizza had a try each.
